Historian Joseph Moore spent years reading dead people's mail — the letters, ledgers, and get-rich books ordinary Americans actually bought — to work out what has really built wealth in this country since 1700, and what only ever sounded wise. He came on to take apart the advice everyone repeats.
They get into why Moore thinks debt doesn't make you rich but opportunity does, why real estate builds comfortable fortunes and almost never great ones, the 4% of stocks that produced all of the market's gains above Treasury bills, what happened when the stock market stopped being a price-discovery machine and became the country's retirement plan, and why Moore says passive investing ends in "a French Revolution where heads start rolling."
