Was Black Panther Racist? Dr. Sheena Howard’s Surprising Take on Wakanda & Survival

James Altucher interviews Dr. Sheena Howard about why Black Panther became her favorite superhero and how Wakanda and the T’Challa–Killmonger conflict reflect colonization, identity formation, stereotypes, and a MLK-versus–Malcolm X framing often used to make white audiences feel safe; they debate whether Wakanda’s isolationism is racist and discuss gentrification symbolism. Howard argues Hollywood and publishing perpetuate myths that Black-led stories don’t sell, creating extra pressure and shifting goalposts, and emphasizes building an audience, email list, and monetization outside Big Five gatekeepers. She recounts being abducted at 19 in Jamaica and later leaving a toxic abusive relationship after having her son, describing abuse dynamics and boundaries. Howard explains how she broke into Marvel by cold-emailing editors and later writing “Wakanda Forever,” and previews projects including “Survive the Gap,” a psychological thriller, and “Hip Hop and Comics” (April 2026).
